The Judges Table Does Skate America 2018

The first competition of the Grand Prix season has ended! Like any good skating event, it was filled with brilliant performances (see below for everyone’s thoughts on Satoko Miyahara) and controversy (were Vincent Zhou’s jumps rotated?), and world records (since this -5 to +5 GOE scoring system is still new!). And while the first Grand Prix after the Olympics is a great chance to see who we can expect to succeed in the next quad, here’s your (incredibly sad) reminder that none of these GP Finalists from 2014 competed in the 2018 Olympics:

Thanks to these judges for sitting at The Judges’ Table during Skate America 2018!

Tell us a little about your experiences with figure skating or as a fan. I’m a lifelong fan who skated as a kid, competing locally and skating in club shows wearing terrible costumes.  I was also on a precision skating team (the precursor to synchro) that competed at Sectionals and Nationals.

Skate America: The Judges

skate america

Two of last year’s Skate America’s medalists in the men’s event have returned in 2018

It’s here! Welcome to the 2018-2019 Grand Prix. After an exciting Junior Grand Prix and what feels like an ever-increasing number of Challenger events, we’ve finally reached the heart of the competitive figure skating season. There’s a lot to look forward to in Washington State – World Champion Nathan Chen, a trio of surging Japanese ladies, whatever we’re calling the short dance now, and a pairs event that may lead to some surprising GPF qualification opportunities.

Everyone who signed up to judge this year provided some really great suggestions for making The Judges’ Table even better this year, so I’m going to apologize in advance that Skate America is probably going to look like events have looked in the past. But with the help of the Editorial Team (to be shared in a future post), The Judges’ Table has a bright future. 😎

Here are the judges for Skate America 2018, including three new participants to The Judges’ Table!

The Judges’ Table Does Skate America 2017

Figure Skating: 2017 Skate America

So, uh, that was an event. 3 competitors withdrew during the event alone (two of those happening during the free skate), and many others found themselves competing injured. Boyang Jin has two sprained ankles. Ashley Wagner’s ankle is infected. Maxim Kovtun hurt his foot. Daniel Samohin and Adam Rippon both dislocated their shoulders in the middle of their programs. And this is all after Anna Pogorilaya, Dabin Choi, Jorik Hendrickx, and Tobias/Tkachenko had to withdraw due to injury or illness in the weeks and days leading up to the event. It’s been a rough Grand Prix season all around, and I’m pretty sure that no one’s joints will ever be the same again. But in the midst of all this insanity, we also saw incredible comebacks and a bevy of personal bests from skaters looking to assert themselves as possible Olympic participants and medalists.

Thanks to these six judges for sitting at The Judges’ Table for Skate America 2017!

Skate America 2017: The Judges

shibutanis_hubbell_donohue_102316_800x375

The final Grand Prix of the season is here! With only a few spots left in the final, American spectators should have a chance to see one of the most exciting events of the season (assuming Thanksgiving holiday-related travel delays don’t keep them from getting to Lake Placid, which is, despite being an Olympic venue, not a super accessible location for this event…).

Thanks to these judges for sitting at The Judges’ Table this weekend, and special thanks to those who are doing so during the Thanksgiving holiday!
