The Judges’ Table Does Rostelecom 2018

alexandra-stepanova-and-ivan-bukin-3

Our judges did not have the most uplifting things to say about the penultimate Grand Prix of the year. They didn’t watch much of the event, and they’re not sorry about it. Rostelecom was messy, creating room for several surprise medalists who took advantage of mistakes by others. Still, in the ladies’ and men’s events, Olympic champions Yuzuru Hanyu and Alina Zagitova took the gold, and the champions in the pairs and dance events were all but a given.

Thanks so much to these judges for sharing their thoughts with The Judges’ Table during Rostelecom Cup 2018:

Tell us a little about your experiences with figure skating or as a fan. I’m a lifelong fan who skated as a kid, competing locally and skating in club shows wearing terrible costumes. I was also on a precision skating team (the precursor to synchro) that competed at Sectionals and Nationals.

Tell us a little about your experiences with figure skating or as a fan. Hardcore fan since Calgary ’88. The Judges Table Does NHK Trophy 2018

NHK Trophy was about as exciting as expected: we got first-time Grand Prix champions in multiple disciplines and several qualifiers to the Grand Prix Final. In the midst of all this, newly-senior Japanese skater Rika Kihira broke 150 in the free skate and landed two triple axels – if she’s clean, she’s going to be hard to beat this season.

The Judges Table Does Skate Canada 2018

piper-gilles-and-paul-poirier

Skate Canada has left us with some surprising results. Evgenia Medvedeva and Gilles/Poirier had to fight their way onto the podium. Mako Yamashita did not. Sinitsina/Katsalapov beat the reigning world silver medalists to win the free dance. Liza T’s 3A is back from the dead. Post-Olympic seasons always offer something something a little different.

We wanted to try to be a little different this week too, so we’re trying something new at The Judges’ Table. In addition to some new questions suggested by judges and the editorial team, we’re also testing out polls this week after some of the questions. Vote on which performance was best, who had the best costume, and who was the most underscored (among others), then let us know what you think by commenting, tweeting, or sending an email. If you have ideas for making The Judges’ Table even better, please reach out!

Thanks to these judges for sitting at The Judges’ Table during Skate Canada 2018, and a huge thank you to Justine, a member of the editorial team, for putting this post together:

The Judges’ Table Does Worlds 2018

nathan

With the absence of many Olympic medalists, some commentators and reporters have decided that Worlds is not a good idea during an Olympic year. Our judges disagreed, commenting on a variety of fabulous performances and highlighting a number of skaters who didn’t get the opportunity to compete in the Olympics.

The ISU appears to be getting videos taken down from YouTube and other video websites, so please move through links to watch skaters’ performances. I apologize for those performances that are missing!

With this, the 2017-2018 figure skating season is officially over! It’s been a great season and I’ve enjoyed reviewing it with all of you. I’m going to take a break from The Judges’ Table before reviewing the year in full or organizing any throwback events, but I do have a few ideas in mind, so stay tuned!

Thanks to these judges for sitting at The Judges’ Table during Worlds!

The Judges’ Table Does the Olympics Ladies’ Event 2018

satoko olympics

With a tie between Alina Zagitova and Evgenia Medvedeva in the free skate, the battle for gold in the ladies’ discipline ultimately came down the short program, where Zagitova bested her training mate by just over a point. Bronze medalist Kaetlyn Osmond became the first lady not named Alina or Evgenia to crack 151 in the free skate (and joins Yuna Kim as the only non-Russians in the top 20 free skate scores ever).

Olympic posts are going to have to be formatted a bit differently than others. As you’ve probably noticed, the IOC and a variety of networks (NBC, which is affecting me in the state, CBC, EuroSport, etc.) are removing or blocking access to videos after the fact. I did the best I could to find links. Some are embedded into the post as normal; others are just linked into the responses.

Thanks to these judges for sitting at The Judges’ Table during the Olympic Ladies’ Event!
