The Judges’ Table Does Worlds 2018

nathan

With the absence of many Olympic medalists, some commentators and reporters have decided that Worlds is not a good idea during an Olympic year. Our judges disagreed, commenting on a variety of fabulous performances and highlighting a number of skaters who didn’t get the opportunity to compete in the Olympics.

The ISU appears to be getting videos taken down from YouTube and other video websites, so please move through links to watch skaters’ performances. I apologize for those performances that are missing!

With this, the 2017-2018 figure skating season is officially over! It’s been a great season and I’ve enjoyed reviewing it with all of you. I’m going to take a break from The Judges’ Table before reviewing the year in full or organizing any throwback events, but I do have a few ideas in mind, so stay tuned!

Thanks to these judges for sitting at The Judges’ Table during Worlds!

Tell us a little about your experiences with figure skating or as a fan. I skate a little myself. But I assist some fancy coaches with their schedule. Am also president of a club and often run or assist in running competitions.
What’s your favorite grossly underscored skate of the last five years? All North American dance in the 80s and 90s.
Events judged: Grand Prix Final 2017, World Championships 2018

Caroline D. (@caroline4pres)
Tell us a little about your experiences with figure skating or as a fan. Ever since I saw Kristi Yamaguchi on Stars On Ice as a toddler, I’ve been obsessed with figure skating. I became completely invested in it when I decided to write about it for my senior thesis as a History major in college. I am ALL about stunts, drama, theatrics, artistry, etc. I always love the hot messes.
What’s your favorite grossly underscored skate of the last five years? Adam Rippon’s free skate at 2015 Nationals.
Events judged: Skate Canada 2017, Russian Nationals 2017-2018, World Championships 2018

Emily M. (@e_mily1998)
Tell us a little about your experiences with figure skating or as a fan. I have been skating for 2 years since coming off a severe hip injury. I used to keep up on skating when I was younger but got back into it in the second half of the 16-17 season
What’s your favorite grossly underscored skate of the last five years? Any time Wakaba Higuchi skated.

Events judged: World Championships 2018

Maddie L. (@MaddieLarson19)
Tell us a little about your experiences with figure skating or as a fan.  I’ve been a fan of figure skating since the 2006 Olympics, but I myself have absolutely no athletic ability.
What’s your favorite grossly underscored skate of the last five years? Yuna Kim’s 2014 Olympic Short Program.
Events judged: Internationaux de France 2017, World Championships 2018

Sigrid (@Mirrorhands)
What’s your favorite grossly underscored skate of the last five years? I always felt the Kerrs were underscored during their whole career. Their programs on the 2010 Olympics were original, fresh but they got harsh marks from the judges.
Events judged: Skate Canada 2015, Rostelecom Cup 2015, European Championships 2016, Trophee de France 2016, World Championships 2018

The Judges’ Table Does Junior Worlds 2018

ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating - Salzburg

Remember Junior Worlds? Despite being right after an exciting Olympics, Junior Worlds still delivered a ton of exciting performances. For those of us who were still too exhausted from the Olympics to watch live (🙋), I’m especially grateful for these four judges, who catch us up and tell us what to look forward to next season!

Thanks to these judges for sitting at The Judges’ Table during Junior Worlds!

The Judges’ Table Does Four Continents Championships 2018

kayne o'shea 4cc 2018

Four Continents is typically not as intense as Euros in an Olympic year. With so much travel required for so many of the athletes, and the competition itself taking place to close to the Olympics, it’s not realistic for the top North American athletes to compete. Despite this, the event featured some fantastic skating from all parts of the world, including several very satisfying final competitive performances (Grant Hochstein and Elladj Balde have confirmed their retirements).

And, uh, not to scare anyone, but the Olympics start in a week and a half. On that note…

Thanks to these judges for sitting at The Judges’ Table during the 2018 Four Continents Championships!

Tell us a little about your experiences with figure skating or as a fan. I’ve been figure skating for 27 years, and a Canadian Skating Official for the last 6. I still get giddy when I put on my skates and hit clean ice, and being an official has given me a whole new perspective on why we do what we do.
Events judged: Skate Canada 2017, Four Continents 2018

Tell us a little about your experiences with figure skating or as a fan. I first became a figure skating fan during the 1994 Olympics, when I was staunchly #teamnancy. So began my life of rooting for the Ones Who Do Not Win. I was more of a casual viewer until 2014, when I fell back in love with watching the sport.
What’s your favorite grossly underscored skate of the last five years? I can’t choose. Justice for my faves!
