The Judges’ Table Does Canadian Nationals 2018

tumblr_inline_p2ba70bzub1s4f7sl_500

What a weekend! Despite my assertion that Canadian Nationals would be substantially less dramatic than the US version, podiums and Olympic teams were a bit of a surprise. Gabrielle Daleman beat a surging Kaetlyn Osmond despite having pneumonia, Seguin/Bilodeau and Moore-Towers/Marinaro upended the conventional thinking on Canadian pairs, a fall from Weaver/Poje gave Gilles/Poirier a silver medal, and Alaskan resident Keegan Messing beat out two Olympians and a world team member for his Canadian spot in Pyeongchang.

Thanks to these judges for sitting at The Judges’ Table during Canadian nationals!

The Judges’ Table Does US Nationals 2018

wagner7s-2-web

That was a lot. I AM SO TIRED. Upsets and surprises were the main story of nearly every event. In the remaining competition, pairs, the top 3 teams all have impressive comeback stories that made their performances a delight to watch. Only Nathan Chen managed to defend his national title and few 2014 Olympians will be on the American team in Pyeongchang. I would put money on Canadian podiums this weekend being a little less surprising.

A side note: please reach out if videos are difficult to access. Media organizations have been removing videos from YouTube.

Thanks to these judges for sitting at The Judges’ Table during a crazy US nationals!

The Judges’ Table Does The Grand Prix Final 2017

maxresdefault

It’s been a minute! The Grand Prix Final took place a week and a half ago, giving you all plenty of time to forget about what went down. But as we look towards Japanese and Russian Nationals this week, what happened there becomes all the more important.

This seems like as good a time as any to apologize for the lateness of this post, and to remind everyone that The Judges’ Table is a labor (more than it feels like it should be!) of love run by one person. I’ve done my best to keep things moving, but I can’t always control when other people send me their responses or who drops out at the last minute, and how all of that interacts with my own schedule. The judges below all sent their responses in either super on-time or jumped in at the very last minute to be part of this post. Thanks to all of you for reading and to these judges, who who sat at The Judges’ Table for GPF 2017 and made this post possible 🙂

Ann J. (@annmjensen)

The Judges’ Table Does Skate America 2017

Figure Skating: 2017 Skate America

So, uh, that was an event. 3 competitors withdrew during the event alone (two of those happening during the free skate), and many others found themselves competing injured. Boyang Jin has two sprained ankles. Ashley Wagner’s ankle is infected. Maxim Kovtun hurt his foot. Daniel Samohin and Adam Rippon both dislocated their shoulders in the middle of their programs. And this is all after Anna Pogorilaya, Dabin Choi, Jorik Hendrickx, and Tobias/Tkachenko had to withdraw due to injury or illness in the weeks and days leading up to the event. It’s been a rough Grand Prix season all around, and I’m pretty sure that no one’s joints will ever be the same again. But in the midst of all this insanity, we also saw incredible comebacks and a bevy of personal bests from skaters looking to assert themselves as possible Olympic participants and medalists.

Thanks to these six judges for sitting at The Judges’ Table for Skate America 2017!

The Judges’ Table Does Rostelecom Cup 2017

gettyimages-863848288_620x350_1078078531961

I’ve always felt there was a huge advantage to the skaters from whichever ISU national federation managed to snag the first Grand Prix of the year – starting the season out with that home crowd scoring boost definitely can’t hurt. Usually, the United States gets that honor, but since we began this season in Moscow, Russia doesn’t appear to have missed the opportunity to offer its skaters some home-cooked scores. Evegenia Medvedeva took home a 150-point gold despite falling, and some of our judges felt Canadians Gilles and Poirier were underscored in favor of budding Russian dancers Stepanova and Bukin (Piper, by the way, seems to agree). Another judge saw politicking in the Russian-swept pairs podium.

Regardless, Rostelecom offered some incredible performances and exciting moments. Nathan Chen established himself as a true contender after beating reigning Olympic champion Yuzuru Hanyu yet again. Wakaba Higuchi reminded us that, yes, she’s still here, and she’ll be fighting hard for one of Japan’s two ladies’ Olympic spots. Carolina Kostner proved that her three decades of experience – cue everyone calling her old – are going to be a benefit rather than a detriment in PyeongChang.

Thanks to these six judges for sitting at The Judges’ Table for Rostelecom!

Arlisse L. (@aethanie)

US and Canadian Nationals 2017: The Judges

The holidays are over, the cold of January is settling in, Americans are either celebrating or thanking their lucky stars that US Nationals are providing a welcome distraction to that thing that’s happening on Friday. But American skating fans have plenty of reasons to be frustrated by sport as well – Adam Rippon, Polina Edmunds, and Alexa Scimeca and Chris Kneirim are just some of the big names taken out of competition this weekend by injury, leaving big gaps on the podium and possibly even larger gaps on the world championship team as competitors look to maintain or reclaim three spots in Pyeongchang.

In significant contrast, Canada looks to be on the upswing – a resurgent team of really strong ladies, a two-time pairs world championship team that seems to peak at just the right time each season, a quad salchow from the guy who won Canadian Nationals eight times without it (eight, 8, one two three four five six seven eight), and the dramatic return of Tessa and Scott should make Canadian Nationals the prelude to a fantastic second half of the international season for Team Canada.

Thank you to these judges who will be giving their takes on American and Canadian nationals!

I am currently at the Novice level and I literally spend all of my free time on skating. Literally. Watching skating, researching skating, dreaming about skating.

What’s your favorite grossly underscored skate of the last five years? I still think Scott & Tessa should be two-time Olympic Champions, definitely underscored in Sochi.

Ryan P. (@jetsfan_85)
Tell us a little about your experiences with figure skating or as a fan. I used to compete from ages 15-17 and casually skated for years later. Just got back into it this year (31y.o now). I watch every GP competition of the year as well as Canadian and American Nationals etc.

So excited to see what will happen in ice dance this season!
