The Judges’ Table Does Olympic Ice Dance 2018

virtue moir

As expected, the battle for gold came down to Virtue/Moir and Papadakis/Cizeron, with the victory going, once again, to the Canadians, who are now the most decorated Olympic figure skaters of all time (thanks, Team Event!).

Olympic posts are going to have to be formatted a bit differently than others. As you’ve probably noticed, the IOC and a variety of networks (NBC, which is affecting me in the state, CBC, EuroSport, etc.) are removing or blocking access to videos after the fact. I did the best I could to find links. Some are embedded into the post as normal; others are just linked into the responses. Not all links will work in every country.

Thanks to these judges for sitting at The Judges’ Table during the Olympic Dance Event!

Tell us a little about your experiences with figure skating or as a fan, if any. I’m a lifelong fan who skated as a kid, competing locally and skating in club shows wearing terrible costumes. I was also on a precision skating team (the precursor to synchro) for 3 years that competed at Sectionals twice and Nationals once.
Favorite grossly underscored skate of the last five years: Satoko Miyahara at 2016 Worlds.
Events judged: Skate America 2015, Skate Canada 2015, US Nationals 2016, World Junior Championships 2016, Throwback: 1994 Olympics Ladies, Skate Canada 2016, NHK Trophy 2017, Olympic Ice Dance Event 2018

Erin C. (@Erinsk8On Stage and Screen
Tell us a little about your experiences with figure skating or as a fan. I was a competitive skater for 10 years and also did some coaching. I fell in love with the sport while watching the drama of the 94 Olympics and have never looked back.
What’s your favorite grossly underscored skate of the last five years? Belbin & Agosto at the 2010 Olympics.
Events judged: NHK Trophy 2015, US Nationals 2016, , World Championships 2017, Rostelecom Cup 2017, Olympic Ice Dance Event 2018

Tell us a little about your experiences with figure skating or as a fan.  I’ve been following skating as a fan since I was very young. My list of events I’ve attended includes 6 US Nationals and 2 Worlds. Sheepishly, I admit I’m still working on telling the jumps apart. Ice dance is my favorite discipline.
Events judged: Internationaux de France 2017, Olympic Ice Dance Event 2018

Mara B. (@missmaraskate)
Tell us a little about your experiences with figure skating or as a fan, if any. I’ve never been to a major event, but I did start taking lessons in June, and can now do a toe loop!
Favorite grossly underscored skate of the last five years: I do wish Weaver and Poje had scored .03 more in their FD at 2014 Worlds.
Events judged: Skate America 2016, Junior Worlds 2017, Grand Prix 2017, Olympic Ice Dance Event 2018

Margaret D. (@elysiondream)| Tumblr
Tell us a little about your experiences with figure skating or as a fan, if any. Like a lot of people, I became a figure skating fan during the whole Nancy/Tanya saga. I fell in love with the combination of art and athleticism and knew I would be a lifelong fan.
Favorite grossly underscored skate of the last five years: Mao Asada’s free at Sochi.
Events judged: Throwback: 2002 Olympics Pairs, Skate America 2016, World Championships 2017, Skate America 2017, Olympic Ice Dance Event 2018

Tell us a little about your experiences with figure skating or as a fan. I’m a national competitor in ice dancing who watches tons of skating in his free time. That’s a pretty good explanation of me as a person.
What’s your favorite grossly underscored skate of the last five years? Jason Brown’s Skate America 2016 Free Skate.
Events judged: Russian Nationals 2016-2017, Junior Worlds 2017, Junior Grand Prix Final 2017, European Championships 2018, Olympic Ice Dance Event 2018

The Judges’ Table Does Skate Canada 2017

meagan-duhamel-and-eric-radford

Parts of Skate Canada were messy: jumps in the ladies free skate were marked underrotated more than 30 times, and Patrick Chan basically fell off the podium. But the ice dance and pairs events featured high-scoring podiums and several extremely triumphant comebacks from Canadian teams.

Thanks to these six judges for sitting at The Judges’ Table for Skate Canada 2017!

Tell us a little about your experiences with figure skating or as a fan. Ever since I saw Kristi Yamaguchi on Stars On Ice as a toddler, I’ve been obsessed with figure skating. I became completely invested in it when I decided to write about it for my senior thesis as a History major in college. I am ALL about stunts, drama, theatrics, artistry, etc. I always love the hot messes.
What’s your favorite grossly underscored skate of the last five years? Adam Rippon’s free skate at 2015 Nationals.

Emily W. (@Em_Wilmes)
Tell us a little about your experiences with figure skating or as a fan. Last year at Skate America I stalked Jorik Hendrickx until he caved and told me where he was sitting; becoming a full blown stan was worth it for that picture.
What’s your favorite grossly underscored skate of the last five years? Is there anyone more #robbed than Zijun Li? (No.)

Erica G. (@egaley)
Tell us a little about your experiences with figure skating or as a fan. I’ve been figure skating for 27 years, and a Canadian Skating Official for the last 6. I still get giddy when I put on my skates and hit clean ice, and being an official has given me a whole new perspective on why we do what we do.

Keira C. (@tripletoes)
Tell us a little about your experiences with figure skating or as a fan. I figure skated as a child but stopped at age 10. I fell back in love with the sport when I caught the 2014 US National Championships on TV and have been obsessed since!!
What’s your favorite grossly underscored skate of the last five years? Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje’s free dance from 2015 Worlds.

Laurel M. (@ThisIsLaurelM)
Tell us a little about your experiences with figure skating or as a fan. I fell in love with ice dance first, watching Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir on TV during the Vancouver Olympics. Now I follow everything, including juniors, but ice dance remains my favourite discipline.
What’s your favorite grossly underscored skate of the last five years? Maybe Virtue/Moir’s SD in Sochi.

Skate Canada 2017: The Judges

osmond

At last year’s Skate Canada, Kaetlyn Osmond roared back into the spotlight, scoring over 200 points for the first time in international competition. She was kept from gold by brilliant performances from Evgenia Medvedeva, who won’t be there this weekend. But Kaetyln will still have to beat a heavyweight collection of ladies skaters, including world medalists Ashley Wagner and Anna Pogorilaya, as well as up-and-comers Karen Chen and Maria Sotskova, to win her first Grand Prix gold since 2012. In the other disciplines, Canadians Duhamel/Radford, Patrick Chan, and Virtue/Moir will all be fighting hard (well, at least the first two will) to keep their Skate Canada International golds – all three have won the event at least three times. With great performances from some of the most talented skaters in the world – and the standard help from the home crowd we’ve come to expect during Grand Prix – Canada has a very real chance to sweep this event.

Thanks to these six judges for sitting at The Judges’ Table for Skate Canada 2017!

The Judges’ Table Does Four Continents 2017

mai-mihara-4cc-2017

The Four Continents Championship is supposed to be the Asian, North America, and Australian response (I assume Africa and South America would be welcome too) to Europeans, but since its inception in 1999, it has had the great *distinction* of being extremely close to the Olympics, not being used in world team selection by the three most competitive countries at the competition, and being a huge schlep for at least half the event’s skaters, regardless of where it takes place. But this year, with the participation of top pairs, dance, and men’s skaters, and as the test event for the 2018 Olympic Games, Four Continents held a bit more excitement. Even the ladies, whose podium featured zero Grand Prix Finalists, zero national champions, and a medalist who didn’t even make the world championship team, put down stellar performances.

Unfortunately, I’ve been unable to track down several videos I was hoping to find for this post. If you find a video that’s missing, please send it this way!

And finally, here we are: thanks to these six judges for sitting at The Judges’ Table for this surprisingly exciting event!

Amber C. (@amberchamberlan) | A Skater’s Perspective
Tell us a little about your experiences with figure skating or as a fan. I am a figure skater and I have been skating for 10 years, and competing for 3. I have been a fan for 4 years and attended the 2016 U.S Figure Skating Championships. I met Ashley Wagner twice, and it was awesome both times.
What’s your favorite grossly underscored skate of the last five years? I would have to go with Ashley Wagner’s short program at the Olympics. I totally agree with her reaction and thought that should have been scored higher.

Clara P. (@jimboppa| You Only Lutz Once
Tell us a little about your experiences with figure skating or as a fan. I am the other half of skating blog You Only Lutz Once, as well as a founding member of Michael Christian Martinez (PHI)’s fansite Tropical Frost. I also try translating updates on Team Korea. Besides streaming, I’ve watched Four Continents in Taipei last season. (Yes, I was one of the two “banner-waving girls caught on TV too many times). Jin Seo Kim (KOR) hugged me at Asia Open Trophy earlier this August, and we had a conversation in both Korean and English.
What’s your favorite grossly underscored skate of the last five years? Kim Yuna’s free skate at the 2014 Olympics. Enough said.

ElisaTumblr
Tell us a little about your experiences with figure skating or as a fan. I’ve been a roller skater for 15 years (and also competed nationally), but of course I am also into ice skating. I have always watched it, but become obsessed after the Sochi Olympics.
What’s your favorite grossly underscored skate of the last five years? Satoko Miyahara’s FS at Worlds 2016 – she was well judged generally, but SO underscored if compared to the other ladies.

Emily W. (@Em_Wilmes)
Tell us a little about your experiences with figure skating or as a fan. My first live figure skating event was the 1998 World Championships. I have always loved figure skating and still bust out my skates occasionally and attempt a Karen Chen-esque spiral (although I am not as successful as she is). My first foray into publicly sharing my skating opinions came last year, when I was one of USFSA’s Fan Bloggers. Now I just tweet, mainly about the fit of the mens’ pants (looking at you, Jorik).
What’s your favorite grossly underscored skate of the last five years? Satoko in general is underscored a lot (in my opinion). Also Ashley. Duh.

Justyna Z. (@anedgecall)
Tell us a little about your experiences with figure skating or as a fan. I’m a figure skating fan who has never skated and now can skate only forward. Not much else. Figure skating was my family tradition when we watched the competition with my mum and grandma.
What’s your favorite grossly underscored skate of the last five years? It’s a popular choice, but Mao Asada Olympic FS in 2014.
Victor (@VictorShi12)
Tell us a little about your experiences with figure skating or as a fan. I am a three-time Sectionals competitor.
What’s your favorite grossly underscored skate of the last five years? Kim Yuna at the 2014 Olympics.

The Judges’ Table Does Canadian Nationals 2017

duhamel-radford-canadian-nats-2017

Canadian Nationals were as exciting of a competition as anyone expected. If you like the unexpected, this was not the event for you (stay tuned for our rejudging of US Nationals!). On the other hand, if you like tremendous skating and world medalist potential in all four disciplines, Canadian Nationals absolutely delivered. Every discipline featured recent Grand Prix Finalists – including GPF champions (finally!) Virtue/Moir, who judges agree are likely to continue their comeback success.

Thanks to these five judges for sitting at the table for Canadian Nationals!

Cassandra (@CKimm1314) | Tumblr
Tell us a little about your experiences with figure skating or as a fan. I’ve been skating since I was three, and am working on becoming a fully certified coach. My first live event at SCI 2015 is what got me into this full time. Long time fan of Patrick Chan though! Now I’m obsessed and if I’m not watching figure skating I’m probably at the rink! 🙂
What’s your favorite grossly underscored skate of the last five years? Probably gonna go with Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir’s free dance in Sochi.

Justine K. (@beanyskates) | Princess Beany Skates
Tell us a little about your experiences with figure skating or as a fan. I skated for years and have now coached for just as many. I fell in love with the sport when I saw Alexei Yagudin live at the 2001 World Championships in Vancouver. Since then I’ve been to another 4 World Championships (and I’ll be in Finland this year!) and a number of smaller events, started a figure skating blog, and dedicated many seasons to getting up early to watch events live from Japan.
What’s your favorite grossly underscored skate of the last five years? I still think Scott & Tessa should be two-time Olympic Champions, definitely underscored in Sochi.

Ryan P. (@jetsfan_85)
Tell us a little about your experiences with figure skating or as a fan. I used to compete from ages 15-17 and casually skated for years later. Just got back into it this year (31y.o now). I watch every GP competition of the year as well as Canadian and American Nationals etc.
What’s your favorite grossly underscored skate of the last five years? Bourne/Kraatz River Dance 1998 Worlds…they should have won gold.

Sharon (@RosaCotton) | Tumblr
Tell us a little about your experiences with figure skating or as a fan. I became a year-round figure skating fan when my roommate and I watched Skate America, and I fell head-over-heels for Davis/White’s Die Fledermaus. Ice dance remains my favorite discipline (men a close second). Having followed the ShibSibs for five years, I was so thrilled for them winning silver at Worlds with two fantastic programs. So excited to see what will happen in ice dance this season!

Taryn (@tleeh)
Tell us a little about your experiences with figure skating or as a fan. I started skating at age 3; quit at age 10 when lessons were at 5 am. I’ve always watched! I’ve attended 2 Skate Canadas, 1 Worlds and one Canadian Nationals. I plan to attend Canadian Nationals this year.
What’s your favorite grossly underscored skate of the last five years? Weaver/Poje Worlds 2016
